support Lunch
Break for Kids;
win $10K for
your ACF chapter
The Chef & Child Foundation is
challenging all ACF chapters to
support Lunch Break for Kids and
national Childhood Nutrition
Day during the month of October.
The ACF chapter in each region
that makes the biggest impact for
childhood nutrition will win $10,000.
The challenge asks chapters to host
a fundraiser—by selling healthy and
delicious lunches during the week of
October 15-19—create a community
event to teach children and their
families about the importance
of a healthy eating, and submit a
video showcasing their event. The
winners will be announced at their
respective regional conferences and
will compete to win an additional
$10,000 at the 2013 ACF National
Convention in Las Vegas. The Chef
& Child Foundation’s partnership
with the makers of Hidden Valley®
Original Ranch® dressings, for a
second consecutive year, made
this challenge possible. Visit
acfchefs.org/childhoodnutritionday
for challenge requirements and

remembering
a legend
If you were asked to name a culinary
legend or inspiration, who would it
be? It’s safe to say that many would
name Julia Child (1912-2004). The
culinary icon rose to fame as a chef,
and later as an author and television
personality with her show “The
French Chef,” which premiered in
1963. August 15 marked Child’s 100th
birthday. Child made a profound
impact on chefs, students and the
culinary industry during her life, and
her principles continue to inspire the
profession today. An op-ed featured in
the L. A. Times August 15 “argues that
Child’s landmark tome, ‘Mastering the
Art of French Cooking,’ is not just a
cookbook: It just may be the greatest
self-help book ever written.” Our salute
to this culinary legend.
